PSYCHE YOURSELF UP BEFORE FASTING
I thought “shall I be all cool hip and trendy and wait till the peak time to post this”, and then thought better of it.
We need time to reflect on doing a fast, it’s called contemplation before starting a change.
I was inspired by a sister on Instagram called @love_yourself_ strong who put up a post a few days ago about a 28 day food challenge for February, cutting out all sorts of every day but potential harmful foods.
It’s great to do these sorts of challenges together so we can buddy each other.
28 day challenges are good because they enable us to break habits and make new habits.
When you cut out something you need to replace it with something else.
This is where planning comes in handy.
CLARIFY THE INTENTION.
And intention is everything…why do we want to make this change?
Do we want to give our body it’s rights?
Do we want to worship Allah in a livelier way?
Is it for health?
Is it to prove to ourselves that we are not slaves to these foods
is it to show ourselves and others that we do have control over our desires
It could e all of the above and more.
It is important to admit to oneself that change is uncomfortable, breaking away from what we are used to.
But I know one thing, prayer, asking Allah, helps me to overcome my desires.
it is always best to get Allah involved in any decision making and any new project. This fast maybe good for you right now or not. Just a little tip: you can pray istikhara and make the duaa prayer in your native language, don’t burden yourself and delay praying istikhara until you can do it in arabic, no, don’t do it in arabic if its hard for you, pray 2 rakats, give salaams to the angels right and left, pout your head on the floor, glorify allah and then ask if this thing is good for your deen in this life and the next to make it easy for you OR if it is bad for your deen in this life and the next, to take it away from you and give you something better ameen
The challenge that was posted did not exclude thing like the deadly nightshade family foods; tomatoes, potatoes, chillies, bell peppers and aubergines that are real pain triggers for some people with arthritis. As I have said before, “one size diet does not fit all”
ONE MAN’S MEAT…
This is the rub…just because something is mentioned in the Quran and is a Sunnah food; it does not mean that it will compliment your temperament, your body balance.
Barley is a Sunnah food, thought not mention specifically in the Quran but it contains gluten, it is not suitable for everyone though it is good very good for some. It maybe also be good for someone, who it normally it would imbalance, at certain times like depression or remorse, sadness but cannot be eaten as a comfort food regularly, if it is causing other problems like stiffness of joints. Are you starting to see?
Diary is mentioned in the Quran but it aggravates health in certain people , we are not saying it is haram , not at all, but it is good for certain people, some can tolerate it and it is aggravating to others.
We need to remember that prophet Muhammad salah lahu alaihi wa salem, had the most balanced of temperament, as was narrated by his young wife Aisha (ra).
Most of us do not have the most balanced of temperament, we are either too loud and firey, too laid back and lazy , passive aggressive or very abrupt. We need to use food to balance our nature.
You can contact us to find out more about your temperament and how to use food to balance it.
FIBROMYALGIA, ARTHRITIS AND PSORIASIS
The challenge some of us are going to do is one that addresses the aggravation that certain foods cause to fibromyalgia, arthritis and psoriasis sufferers.
Fibromyalgia and psoriasis are both auto immune diseases. The definition of an autoimmune disease is taken from www. webmd.com.
“Immune system disorders cause abnormally low activity or over activity of the immune system. In cases of immune system over activity, the body attacks and damages its own tissues (autoimmune diseases). Immune deficiency diseases decrease the body’s ability to fight invaders, causing vulnerability to infections.”
According to the Saudi Gazette, even super stars like Lady Gaga suffer with fibromyalgia,
“Lady Gaga, who shot to global fame in 2008 with her hit debut single “Just Dance,” has previously revealed she suffers from the chronic pain condition Fibromyalgia.”
THE CUT OUT LIST
• Red meat
• Sugar and sugary foods
• Diary, milk, cheese, yoghurt, eggs, butter
• Gluten foods like wheat barley and rye
• Deadly Nightshade Family Foods; tomato, potato, bell peppers, aubergine, chilli
• Stimulants; tea, coffee, chocolate,(means chocolate bars as well) fizzy drinks
• Citrus; lemon, lime, orange, tangerine, mandarin, grapefruit
Interesting 7 groups of deadly sins.
Later on today in shaa Allah we will post a list of alternative foods but right now please ponder on the thing you would do well to cut out. If you are not able to cut out everything, then pick 2-3 like tea coffee ad chocolate and start with that and see how you go.
