I notice that there are a few diets around for Ramadan this year that have taken on board how good protein is for giving you long sustained energy , however according to Dr Mercola and an opinion I agree with, based on my clinical nutrition studies, too much protein can actually be harmful for you.
Too much protein and not enough fruit and veggies, creates an imbalance that puts a strain on your kidneys, harmful to your liver, dehydrates you, contributes to diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, is bad for your skin and other organs and leeches important minerals from your bones.
If you have ever had the opportunity to hang out with any body builders you will see what I mean. The ones that eat high protein diets have very dry lined skin for their ages-it’s shocking.
It’s true the body needs protein and the essential amino acids it contains, especially as we age, it improves our mood, helps keep nervous system functioning, provides sustained energy and strength ,however this has to be balanced with fruits, containing loads of vitamins and veggies containing loads of minerals and good healthy fats.
Protein is need to maintain lean muscle that deteriorates
as we get older, however Dr Mercola believes that animal protein is better absorbed than plant protein, this is view shared by Dr Zakir Nike.
In the past , zealots of purely plant based vegan only diet would have scoffed at the idea of eating any meat. Now, because of the cacophony of opinions, some authentic and some financed by the meat and dairy marketing board , they say eating meat is alright or even necessary.
There is so much information out there right now and much of it contradictory.
If you read between the lines of the China Study by Dr Colin T Campbell and look a the four groups studied, the Abkhazians of the Caucasus Mountains, the Vilcabambans of Ecuador ,the Hunzans of Pakistan and the Okinawa of japan, they all ate a plant based diet that included a little meat or fish. You have to read the China Study properly to glean this direction.
Personally this study is an affirmation for me of the diet of prophet Muhammad, salah la alaihi wa salem, who sometimes never ate meat of 2-3 moons.
Some say this was because he was poor, forgetting that he was a Messenger of the Most High Allah and could have asked for anything he wished.
Other like myself see this example, guiding us, that eating too much meat is unhealthy, this I backed up by Umar ibn al Kitab(ra) a later caliph, banning the eating of meat every day and the last of the 4 rightly guided caliphs, Ali (ra) who only ate meat once a year at Eid.
A diet rich in meat, eggs, milk and cheese could be as harmful to health as smoking, according to a controversial study into the impact of protein consumption on longevity.
The findings emerged from a study of 6,381 people aged 50 and over who took part in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) which tracks a representative group of adults and children in the US.
Many holistic nutritionists, as well as myself are saying people should restrict themselves to no more than 0.8g of protein a day for every kilogram of body weight;
Equivalent to 48g for a 60 kg person, and 64g for an 80 kg person.MORE WHEN FASTING RAMADHAN BUT BALANCE WITH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES INSTEAD OF STARCHY CARBS
Although animal protein is necessary too much protein creates imbalance that puts a strain on your kidneys, harmful to your liver, dehydrates you, contributes to diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, is bad for your skin and other organs and leeches important minerals from your bones.
If you have ever had the opportunity to hang out with any body builders you will see what I mean. The ones that eat high protein diets have very dry; lines skin for their ages-it’s shocking.
Protein is great and necessary but needs to be balanced with more fruits and vegetables for optimum nutrition.
So an iftar meal made up of a variation of fruits and vegetables and some protein, relative to your weight, is more healthy than a mainly protein meal, only in our opinion, even when you are fasting.
Finally I want to draw your attention to this gem of a hadith, Islamic tradition of prophet Muhammad, salah la alaihi wa salem,
HADDITH MEAT AND WATER IN MAKKAH
A diet of meat and water only will make you sick unless you live in Makkah……
Abraham…came to Ishmael’s wife and asked her about Ishmael. She said, ‘He has gone in search of our livelihood.’ Abraham asked her, ‘How are you getting on?’ asking her about their sustenance and living. She replied, ‘We are prosperous and well-off (i.e. we have everything in abundance).’ Then she thanked Allah. Abraham said, ‘What kind of food do you eat?’ She said. ‘Meat.’ He said, ‘What do you drink?’ She said, ‘Water.” He said, “O Allah! Bless their meat and water.” The Prophet added, “At that time they did not have grain, and if they had grain, he would have also invoked Allah to bless it.” The Prophet added, “If somebody has only these two things as his sustenance, his health and disposition will be badly affected, unless he lives in Mecca.” (Bukhari 4.853 Ibn Abbas)
