FEED THE NEED
by Karimah bint Dawoud, muslim chaplain and well being writer
Since the beginning of time there have been those who love to share food and those who don’t, it must be something deep in the nature of man or woman that inclines their heart to the left or to the right.
In chapter 107 of the Quran, al Ma’un the small kindnesses
In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.
Almighty Allah Says (what means): “Have you seen the one who denies the Recompense? For that is the one who drives away the orphan. And does not encourage the feeding of the poor. So woe to those who pray. [But] are heedless of their prayer – Those who make show [of their deeds]. And withhold [simple] assistance.” [Quran 107: 1-7]
IN The Book of Deuteronomy
It is the fifth book of the Hebrew Bible, and of the Jewish Torah/Pentateuch, it says
Deut. 15:7. If there is a poor man among you, one of your brothers, in any of the towns of the land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart, nor close your hand to your poor brother; but you shall freely open your hand to him, and generously lend him sufficient for his need in whatever he lacks.
Deut. 26:12. When you have finished paying the complete tithe of your increase in the third year, the year of tithing, then you shall give it to the Levite, to the stranger, to the orphan and the widow, that they may eat in your towns, and be satisfied.
It is a directive of all the Abrahamic faiths and I sure other religions as well.
Karimah’s Cuisina is a faith based, well being organisation, constituted as a small charity, one of our objectives in our constitution is to feed the needy….why? because we are muslim.
From time there have been mercy tables from the Muslims, erected in the community to nourish those who have fallen in hard times. It is a directive from The Creator to those who truly believe to share with those less fortunate. There are many out there who would love to do this , want to do this but just don’t know how.
Recently during the month of Ramadhan and thanks to the social network of Face Book I spotted some of my sistars on the streets, feeding the needy. Mashallah! as The Creator would have it be it was happening right under my nose, “excuse me sistars, I would like to be a part of this.” and that is all it took for me to get involved with sistars on the street.
This imitative was started off by Muneera from Poetic Pilgrimage, the international nashseed duo. Whatever you may think of nashseed and ” has it got duff and a one side duff at that , etc, etc, etc”, these sistars are out there doing it. There is a safety angle to so that for every sister on the street , there is one brother for her security, mashallah, I call this sensible thinking. You see to facilitate these sorts of projects there has to be the equilibrium of male and female, to get Allah’s work done, you cannot completely segregate the sexes. Some of you may say “Well, why can’t the women cook and stay at home and the brothers go out on their own?”
Good point but some of the unfortunates on the street are women, venerable woman and some of them are sisters. It is not appropriate for venerable women of any kind, to be dealt with by men, just because you are Muslim does not mean that you are not a man and open to the whispers of Shatan.
It was saddening when I asked certain brothers for money in the UK, that their reply was that the government had a responsibility to feed the poor, these were brothers who are involved in Islamic activities, promoting talks etc but obviously need to read the Quran more.
However the generosity of other Muslim was overwhelming, amongst the donations of money, skills and time, we were given money from a collective of Muslim black cab drivers mashallah, a true scholar who is also a builder and his beautiful wife mashallah .A widow who loves to give dowaa also donated to us so Alhamdulillah we were more than covered. Health and safety for me is a big thing. We bought insulated carrying bags to keep the foods piping hot as we gave it out. Alhamdulillah I have my environmental health and safety award so was able to amok sure high standard were maintain. we also had a healthy aspect tot eh food we gave out; brown basmati rice with cloves, cardamom and cinnamon, with Moroccan Harira but made into a stew and chilli added in the initial masala to liven it up a bit. We bought loads of cartons of juice Alhamdulillah and made loads of Allah that Allah would make it easy for us to complete this peace of dowaa
Right now we are just rounding up the troops,
sisters to shop and peel and chop,
brothers to pack and carry and stack and watch our back
I am pondering over nutritious ingredient because I’m one of those cooking,
sharing my recipe s with those who are helping and looking,
to get closer to Allah by being part of the team
of all star players cos this life is a dream
before the next life, the real life so we need more good deeds
take action and join us, inshallah we will succeed AMEEN.
