Health Benefits
It’s no coincidence that more than 300 research studies on broccoli have converged in one unique area of health science—the development of cancer—and its relationship to three metabolic problems in the body. Those three problems are (1) chronic inflammation (2) oxidative stress, and (3) inadequate detoxification. While these types of problems have yet to become part of the public health spotlight, they are essential to understanding broccoli’s unique health benefits. Over the past 10 years, research has made it clear that our risk of cancer in several different organ systems is related to the combination of these three problems.
This is what relates particularly to #BONES
Bone health: Broccoli contains high levels of both calcium and vitamin K, both of which are important for bone health and prevention of osteoporosis.
The following information on Broccoli and Bones is from Dr Axe.
Broccoli is an excellent source of vitamin K, calcium, magnesium and potassium, which are essential for healthy bones, nails and teeth. High levels of vitamin K and iron are vital for maintaining bone mineral density (in addition to having many other benefits like promoting blood health and boosting your energy levels).
Some even say that vitamin K builds bones better than calcium, and just one cup of broccoli provides over 270 percent of your daily vitamin K needs! There’s evidence in human intervention studies that vitamin K and vitamin D work together to positively impact bone metabolism and that a vitamin K deficiency or vitamin D deficiency increases risks for bone-related diseases. Vitamin K also positively affects calcium balance, a key mineral in bone metabolism. (6)
Calcium found in broccoli is also crucial for preventing calcium deficiency plus building and maintaining strong teeth and bones — especially into older age when people become more susceptible to bone breaks, fractures and bone density loss. If your body doesn’t get enough calcium, it steals calcium from your bones to help keep a steady amount in your blood, so including more broccoli in your diet is a natural osteoporosis treatment and prevention method.

A third area of increasing research interest involves the metabolism of vitamin D. Broccoli is not a source of this vitamin, but it is an excellent source of vitamin K and also of vitamin A (in one of its precursor forms, beta-carotene). Many individuals have large vitamin D deficiencies that cannot be remedied through diet alone, and these deficiencies require sizable amounts of vitamin D to be provided through dietary supplementation. When large supplemental doses of vitamin D are needed to offset deficiency, ample supplies of vitamin K and vitamin A appear to help keep our vitamin D metabolism in the proper balance. Assuring adequate intake of vitamins K and A alongside of vitamin D supplementation may turn out to be important in achieving optimal vitamin D supplementation results and avoiding potential problems related to supplementation. Broccoli may turn out to play a particularly helpful role in balancing this set of events by providing its unusually strong combination of both vitamin A and vitamin K. As mentioned earlier in this article, broccoli is our 16th best source of vitamin A (in the form of carotenoids) at WHFoods. It is also our 9th best source of vitamin K.

When you are going through days, weeks and months of not sleeping properly because of having hot flushes that are so strong that they wake you up every 1-2 hours, you will try almost anything to get good nights sleep.

I have been taking Black Cohosh, St John’s Wort, Vervain tablet form. Camomile, nettle, lady’s mantle and red clover as tea. After 2 weeks I got a better night sleep last night, Alhamdulillah praise God.
Hot flushes however need dealing as they come day and night.
The liver is connected with hot flushes. As heavy metals and toxins have built up in our body over the years the liver becomes congested. The liver is the main organ that deals with all the chemical metabolic functions.
If the liver is congested it will cause heat in the body and contribute to hot flushes, so what’s the solution.
I am currently researching Foods mentioned in the Quran, the Holy Book of Muslims and I came across camphor in Arabic kafir or kafur,
In Surat/ chapter 76 Al Insan/The Man, ayat/verse 5:
“Indeed, the righteous will drink from a cup [of wine] whose mixture is of Kafur,” This verse is referring to Paradise, the next life.
Now there is a difference of opinion whether kafur is camphor or henna.
Dr. M.I.H. Farooqi (Dr. Mohammed Iqtedar Husain Farooqi), in India, puts forward a very good argument that kafur is actually henna.
It is by divine guidance that I am able to join the dots and my firm belief that foods, herbs, drinks, mentioned in the Quran are sacred, that moves me forward.
I thought to research henna as a drink. I know henna takes heat out of the body when applied external; I used to be a professional henna artist for wedding and in museums.
Alhamdulillah I found that Henna can be taken internally.
According to Web MD
“Henna is a plant. The leaf is used to make medicine.

Don’t confuse henna with henna root (Alkanna tinctoria), also referred to as alkanna root.

Historically, henna has been used for severe diarrhea caused by a parasite (amoebic dysentery), cancer, enlarged spleen, headache, jaundice, and skin conditions. These days, people take henna for stomach and intestinal ulcers.

Henna is sometimes applied directly to the affected area for dandruff, eczema, scabies, fungal infections, and wounds.

In manufacturing, henna is used in cosmetics, hair dyes, and hair care products; and as a dye for nails, hands, and clothing.

People also use henna on the skin as temporary “tattoos.”
How does it work?
Henna contains substances that might help fight certain infections. There is also some information that henna might decrease the growth of tumors, prevent or reduce spasms, decrease inflammation, and relieve pain.”

There is a connection between the liver and hot flushes.

According to Prophetic Medicine BlogSpot

“Henna water is an excellent detoxifier. It can remove impurities and heavy metals which have built up in the body for many years. Therefore drinking it on an empty stomach is very beneficial for cleaning the liver and kidneys of diabetic patients, those with IBS, ulcers, kidney stones etc.

To make Henna water, take 5-7 grams of whole dried leaves and soak them overnight in 2 glasses of water. Filter and drink the water in the morning after Fajr on an empty stomach. This process can be repeated daily for 7-10 days.

Very dark urine will be expelled over this period and this is the proof that impurities are being expelled from the body. Henna Water has a slightly grassy taste and if you find this unpalatable you can mix a little bit of honey with it before drinking in sha’Allah.

One of the established Sunnah as recorded by Al Bukhari suggests that an infusion of water and Henna leaves was something which was used during the time of the Holy Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) but this Hadith does not specifically mention it as being drunk. [Vol 7, Book 71, Hadith 661]

After a number of dissappointing experiences with hijama practioners I decided to start studying hijama myself with the intention of self administering insha’allah.

It’s a therapy recommended by the angels to prophet Muhammad, salah la alaihi wa salem, and as Muslims we strive to follow his example.

I have found it to be a beneficial therapy by the grace of Allah however I have got to the point where I feel I want to learn more about it and self administer or skill swap with friends insha’Allah God willing.

I found this amazing site, showing the various places on the body you can put hijaama cups. This site doesn’t show points on the head which I have had “cupped” in the past but insha’Allah I’ll find  somewhere else.

You can buy the necessary cups on line , like this set that comes with a pump.

Tradtionally hijama is done by using a flame to create a vacuum in glass cups.

Whether it’s your own brain fog, depression, dizziness, irritability, lack of energy,  or mood swings, mental health is affected by what we consume as food and drinks.

Children’s unbalanced behavior, learning difficulties can be and is affected by food or bad mood food is something that affects our minds.

I tweaked the  following excellent piece from passionate foodie Hannah Hepworth sheds some light on foods that we would do well to avoid or drastically cut down on.

Nutrition is probably one of the most underrated components of any anti-anxiety program.  We normally don’t think that foods can cause or exacerbate anxiety but in truth, they can.

Just as good, healthy, unadulterated foods can strengthen your body, because food is information for your cells, food can also wreak havoc and cause unnecessary stress in your body.  In this blog post I’d like to walk you through the top 5 foods to avoid if you have anxiety.

I have to warn you, you may read through this list and feel like you been sentenced to death because your diet is mostly made up of these foods.  This is not meant to stress you out more!  This is to help you become aware of any bad mood foods in your diet so you can begin to decrease and eliminate them.

If you eat all of them on a regular basis, pick 1 that you can begin eliminating from your diet.  Go slow, experience success and improvement and then drop another.  Let’s get started!

I’ll just start with this food first.  We all love it, many of us are even addicted to it, although we may not like to admit it;)  Sugar is a major stressor to your body.  Sugar tastes wonderful, but it’s void of nutrients giving you empty calories.

When you fill up too much on sugary foods (which can also be foods that turn to sugar quickly like simple carbs i.e. white flour, white rice…) you don’t leave yourself room to eat nutrient dense foods like fruits and veggies, whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds, raw dairy and meat.  You can eventually become deficient in many nutrients which then creates a host of problems that cause and exacerbate anxiety and stress.

Sugar also promotes inflammation in the body.  This can be located ANYWHERE in the body, do your joints ache?  Do you suffer from mental illness?  Inflammation is the root of all illness.

Make a goal to eliminate sugar for 1 week.  See how you feel.  You might not even realize how yucky it makes you feel until you add it back in.  Try it out for yourself!

This isn’t something that I’ve ever really struggled with as I’m not a soda, coffee or tea drinker.

However, I know tons of people who can’t live without their “Dew” or their Diet Coke multiple times a day. The thing with caffeine is that it depletes B-vitamins (namely B1), which are so important for a healthy, unfrazzled nervous system.

Caffeine also triggers an adrenalin release just like stress does and can cause and exacerbate panic attacks. If you struggle with panic attacks please eliminate caffeine!  It restricts blood flow to the brain, causes your heart to race (think anxiety) and dehydrates your whole body.

You can get coffee replacements like Barley Cup or Dandelion Root Coffee.

Sometimes just the simple act of drinking ample water is enough to reduce anxiety in a person.

Processed Foods

Processed foods lack nutrients.  They are often so processed that manufacturers have to add nutrients back into them to be able to deem them as “food.”  This is a bit of a stretch in my opinion.  Our grocery stores are filled with a majority of packaged foods teaming with fake colors, flavors and preservatives to make them more enticing, visually appealing and to light up our taste buds, (more on this later).  Bottom line, start shopping the perimeter of the grocery store.  If you struggle with anxiety your body is already a stress ball, you don’t need to add to it by eating nutrient void foods.  They have no place in your diet. We need to include processed meats in this category.

Bad Fats

You might have been tricked into thinking that all fats are bad but this simply isn’t the case. Each of our trillions of cells have a membrane around them that are made up of fat.  Bad fats include any fat that says hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated before it.  Bad fats also include canola (rapeseed) oil, peanut oil, corn oil, margarine, cottonseed oil, soy oil, crisco, vegetable oil, and safflower oil.  Most foods that are processed contain unhealthy fats.  When you eat these fats they make the membrane around your cells become stiff and rigid, making it hard for your cells to communicate with one another.

Good Fats

When you eat healthy fats like coconut oil, olive oil, avocado oil, and butter you are nourishing the cell membranes helping them stay fluid and flexible which allows them to communicate with one another.  If you have anxiety, you better believe you want your brain cells communicating properly with one another!!

Good fats also nourish your nervous system.  Strive to switch out the bad fats in your diet with good fats. Add them to smoothies, cook with them and slather them on toast, potatoes and rice (brown that is;)!

Excitoxins- MSG/Fake Sugar

I’m going to lump these last two ingredients together.  I can’t really call them foods though.  MSG otherwise known as monosodium glutamate and fake sugar which can go by the names of aspartame, sucralose or saccharine, among other names listed in this article by Dr. Oz are both damaging to your brain cells and nervous system.

MSG is a damaging food additive that enhances the flavor of many foods from soups, to salad dressings, crackers, frozen dinners and commonly in Chinese food.

MSG is considered an excitotoxin which means that it overexcites your cells to the point of death and can cause brain damage.  You can read more about what MSG can do to your body and names that it can go by in this article by Dr. Mercola

Fake sugar is similar in that it can damage your nervous system and excite the neurons in your brain making them fire like crazy until they die.  I’ve shared information on staying away from fake sugar before on social media and am usually contacted by diet soda companies telling me there’s no evidence.

I personally know multiple people, including myself, who have experienced adverse effects of eating fake sugar.  3 times after I have eaten even tiny amounts of food with fake sugar I have had extreme dizziness and a damaged feeling in the nerves of my head.  A couple times I couldn’t walk in a straight line, and it took a few days to really subside.  If you struggle with anxiety you don’t need to be eating ANYTHING that could even POTENTIALLY be damaging to your nervous system.

When you are anxious your nervous system is in a state of high alert.  We want to calm the nervous system, and activate your body’s relaxation response so you can get your body in a state to where it can begin healing naturally.
