LIVE BELOW THE LINE, DAY 2 REVISED LUNCH & FOTO

What was really getting to me yesterday was the lack of fresh veggies, then I remembered we had done some plating a few weeks ago and the pea sprouts were coming along nicely.

The LIVE BELOW THE LINE Rules say,

“You can use food sourced from your garden as long as you can account for the price of production! “

12 pea sprouts 8p

1/3 can chickpeas 8p you could soak and sprout some

30g raw onion 2p

Lemon juice 3p

Its so cold that I want something hot as well, so I’m going to have curried beans, half of this salad, cut out  the 12p chickpeas and have a bit of olive oil and lemon on the salad instead, a small 3p naan and a dollop of yoghurt inshallah, we have dandelions growing in our gardened as well, wild , so no charge and they will certainly bump up the greens, they are not a weed, they are a medical plant. Just cut them wash them, put them in the salad spinner and Bob’s your uncle, add to salad.

Alhmdulilah I’m a happy bunny now I have my carrots and greens, ready to finish my juz of the Quran, alhmdulilah, where there is a will there is a way when you trust in Allah.

LIVE BELOW THE LINE DAY2 BREAKFAST

Hmmmmmm, where do I start, I’m feeling tired, headache, probably some de-tox reaction going on from not having my daily one cup of coffee after breakfast. I also know the tiredness is because I’m not having my usual fruit and vegetation start to the day

As I moozied through yesterdays beans in assorted flavors and refine carbs and  yoghurt, I realized that I seriously need to up the anti with green plants in this meager diet.

Less Refined Carbs, More Fruit

Today is another day. After doing Islam Channel , Living The Life , last night, with Na’eem and Rahim, I realized that some people just think about the money and some just think about “how much stuff can I get with  this money so I will be full”. On that thought and thinking of way to combat my acidic stomach I decided to cut down on refine carbs and up the anti with plant based foods, so this morning breakfast is one less pancake and the addition of a lovely green kiwi, packed with vitamin c and great of the eyes.

Breakfast

1 pancake 8p

1 kiwi    10p

1 banana 7p

Yoghurt 8p

Total 33p

My stomach still feels acidic, this is such a break from my normal healthy start of water, herb tea a with honey, green fruit and veg juice, then brunch.

The one pound a day is unhealthy because you do not get your five a day on this money.

There is still time to sign up for this challenge, please see link below

LIVE BELOW THE LINE, Day 1 Lunch

12pm Lunch Time

About an hour after eating   I had acid in my stomach, I have an ulcer, so normally I eat foods to avoid this and thought that by eating brown rice flour  and not wheat, that every thing would be ok, but it passed, normally I’m would have some herbal tea with honey and a green juice, etc, however all I can have is water.

LIVE BELOW THE LINE -Curried beans

For about the last hour I have been bored and craving, even though I have been quite busy , its lunch time but we have nothing prepared, I think it’s going to have to be curried beans, pancake and yoghurt. Then boil some black eye peas for later, because we have to go to Islam Channel , a Muslim channel on Sky TV,  the programme is called Living the Life, to promote this project,

Lunch curried beans, 1 pancake and yoghurt, if I have less yoghurt I can have three dates now as they are only 1 p each from Southall, you know the cheap ones from Tunisia that we English people  eat at Christmas , you can get three packs for a pound and they give you 100 dates, Alhamdulillah, its better than nothing, seriously dates have natural vitamins and minerals and I don’t have the choice  of my healthy juices right now

LUNCH

Curried baked bean

2 Brown Rice Flour Pancakes

Yoghurt

As I eat my lunch, my stomach still hurting acid wise, I think this lack of green leafy vegetables, that I usually eat, is going to harm my stomach this week, I am glad this is happening alhmdulilah, so I can see and feel for myself the effects of this diet.We have made every effort to produce recipes within this budget that are healthy, possible tomorrow I am going to have more of a raw food day and need to forage for some dandelion leaves to make a salad inshallah.

Live Below the Line – Day 1

Live Below The Line

Breakfast

Rice Flour Pancake

Banana

Yoghurt

Sprinkled with cinnamon

Technically I started last night because I have a fundraising dinner to go to on Friday night, the last day.

I woke up this morning and thought,

“I can’t have what I want to eat today and not only for today  but for the next 5 days!”

It is a sobering thought.

I drank my water as I normally do but thought

“ No herbal tea, no honey, no healthy fruit and veggie green juice” and resigned myself to more water, then remembering I soaked some  dates in water that I quickly went and drank for a quick sugar hit saving the dates for later.

Alhamdulilah , planning is one of the keys to success, I knew what I was having for breakfast and had been psyching myself up, since last night. Last night we were out on the street, feeding the homeless, so straight into this is a bit hardcore, mashallah, alhmdulilah.

I have a number of volunteers and helpers who help  me cook in order to learn from me mashallah, I was handed my banana, yoghurt and pancake, I walked a step away from the kitchen then turned back, then turned away again and turned, this went on three or four times, I was contemplating sprinkling my food with 2p worth of cinnamon, because I knew this meal is 31p without it, I finally decided that flavor and a nutritionally justification for cinnamon being an anti inflammatory which I need, won the day.

Truthfully it was really nice and I know I can eat this every day for the next 5  days inshallah but the lack of choice and my nutritional knowledge knows that honey first thing in the morning is a Sunnah of the prophet Muhammad, peace and blessing of the creator, that holds a lot of wisdom for the astute if mind.

As I look at this foto of my breakfast, I imagine some heartless politician thinking, “that’s looks quite nice , I could love on that!”

We make things look good, attractive, that’s what we do, but it’s an illusion, it’s the psychological aspect of this challenge where there is so little choice, no butter to fry you pancakes just a tiny bit of vegetable oil.Butter and its taste is a comfort food, no jam not honey. Seriously I challenge any politician to eat what we at Karimahs Cuisina make, for five days and then come talk to me, because believe me, this is going to get boring, so boring it will be mentally and spiritually  interesting………….

Karimahs Cuisina is a faith based well-being organisation that has been regularly feeding the homeless on the streets of London since last Ramadan. By the grace of Allah, the project has gone from strength to strength. This project is made possible by our intergenerational all-star volunteers, who ages range from 18 to 69 maashallah.

We are a combination of practicing reverts and born Muslims , from all over the world. Our objective is to give the homeless, who include some Muslims, a large quality healthy meal, with an option of meat and vegetarian, a hot healthy drink.

Our principle is based on the Quranic ayat, Surat Al Baqarah 2: 267

“ O you who have believed, spend from the good things which you have earned and from that which We have produced for you from the earth. And do not aim toward the defective therefrom, spending [from that] while you would not take it [yourself] except with closed eyes. And know that Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy.”
